For our 16-mile, narrated, round trip, you will ride on the Reading and Northern mainline leaving Jim Thorpe. On the way to Old Penn Haven, you will pass Glen Onoko, which is the southern gateway to the Lehigh Gorge State Park. The train follows the winding Lehigh River through the gorge rounding curve after curve until you reach Old Penn Haven.
Open Air Car
Once seated in the car, passengers face outwards to enjoy the view through the open sides. Passengers are also allowed to get up and stand along the sides of the open air car to enjoy the breeze and view the gorge. Our open air cars have roofs, and will be part of our train consist May through October.
Our standard blue coaches were built in 1932 by Bethlehem Steel. Each coach comes equipped with functional windows, comfortable seats and clean restrooms.
Gondola Car "Ride and Bike" to Old Penn Haven Option
Ride on most regular LGSRY trips in the Open Air car and load your bike in the Gondola Car for the ride from Jim Thorpe to Old Penn Haven. Once at Old Penn Haven, you can unload your bike to take an 8 mile bike ride back to Jim Thorpe. The Ride and Bike is available from May through September on days the 25 mile White Haven Bike Train is not operating.
The caboose offers family and friends in groups of up to 6 people to privately ride regular LGSRY trips. Enjoy the views of the Lehigh Gorge from the cupola windows inside the caboose or outside platforms on both ends of the car. The caboose is available from May through September.
Restrooms are available in the station and also available on all trains.
All trains are diesel-powered, unless otherwise specified.
Handicap access to the train is available at the Jim Thorpe Station. Ask for details when you pick up your tickets.
Our train is family friendly! Smoking and alcoholic beverages are not permitted on the train.
Well behaved dogs are welcome to ride the train free-of-charge.
The train ride lasts about 70 minutes, round-trip. In October, trains run 45 minutes round-trip. Schedules will be adhered to as closely as possible.
